... a journey from the heart

My Singing Journey

Master Class by Joyce DiDonato

Joyce DiDonato Master Class January 2016: Puccini’s “Donde lieta usci” from La bohème

Some of the tips from Joyce in this video are...

NG exercises, it is one of the exercises I do whenever I couldn't get a sound out of me (in the past).

Joyce said that sing the same thing over and over in different ways.  If you get stuck and you keep on doing the same thing, you are to get stuck over and over again.  So, you have to sing it again and again in many different ways so you can discover.

Breath, use your breath to push it up instead of plowing through it.

Whenever I get stuck on a note that I couldn't get it open, I would do my NG exercises and it opens it up with tone and volume. Amazing exercises.

Got to watch this video over and over again to learn from what Joyce is doing in her work with this beautiful singer.

Tips from Joyce from various videos and training online...

Joyce DiDonato Master Class 2015: Handel’s “Piangerò la sorte mia” from Giulio Cesare

Connect to the words... we always have endless works on the technique.... that techniques have to serve a purpose... it is not to create a beautiful sound... that is lovely when that happens...  but it is hollow if it is not telling us something.... you're singing beautifully ... but it doesn't go here (pointing to her heart...) and it doesn't do this (pull the hair goosebumps on her arm....) .... It's not about you... it's about them (she pointed to the audience... to me, it will be pointing to the congregation to my heart that I am singing to draw them to serve the Lord and feel the presence of the Lord through my singing...) ...

The singer in this video is amazing!  She was a good student... she sang so beautifully.  But after Joyce's critics and guidance and tips, the singer sang again and was blowing us away with her follow up singing after Joyce's teaching her.
